plant that had received lots of awards for production, human resources and management. We asked the management for an hour's tour of the plant.

"Then, the CEO gave a presentation on the company's best practices for two hours. I thought it was great learning experience. Unfortunately, the feedback was not good. People complained that the company was in a different industry than theirs. They thought they didn't learn much. Instead, they suggested visiting other international financial institutions to see what they could apply to their own organisations."

"Why did they feel that way, Khun Kriengsak?" Peter asks.

"I sat down with the programme director to discuss the cause. I think there were a few possible causes.

"First, we didn't orient them for best-practice learning. If I have to do it again, I will do it differently. I have to educate them to get them to fully understand that learning from best practices is not about copying. It's about looking for an idea to integrate into a business regardless of what business we visit.

"I also need to turn the trip into a something like a homework project. I think our educational system and the instructions at a typical Thai organisation, make our people homework-oriented. They need clear instructions and a fill-in-the-blanks approach. I will prepare an observation sheet with clear instructions about what to observe, what to ask, and what to do after the visit."

Peter is concerned. "If I was one of your participants, I would feel a little bit embarrassed _ you would be treating me like a child."
